While some people think the main event is taking place in Cork City, we all know that the best sessions are taking place right here in beautiful Kinsale. Now in its 23rd year, the Kinsale Fringe Festival is less frenetic than it’s larger relation but it has an unexplainable magnetism; with a fantastic line-up of top class Jazz, Blues and groovy sounds in a charming and intimate setting. From Friday through Sunday there’ll be free performances by over 30 artists and ensembles in no less than 15 venues across the town each day from lunchtime to late night!
So much is happening that you may well find there is no need to ever leave Kinsale for the entire weekend!
Some of the highlights of the festival will include a free gig at The White Lady on Friday 26th with Jazz and Blues sensations “The Blues Brothers Banned!” – a stunning 10 piece UK band doing the Guiness Jazz Festival tour. On the Jazz Trail you have the choice of regular favourites such as ‘Sharon Crosbie’, ‘Two Time Polka’ and the ‘Cadillac Cats’ in the Blue Haven bar, ‘Ian Briggs & The Supervampers with guests Doc Fingers & Jim Crawford’ at the Trident Hotel’s Wharf Tavern, ‘Billy Crosbie & Friends’ at the White House, ‘Stringfellows’ at the Folk House as well as ‘Loose Change’ at the Armada bar and Hamlets. Other artists not to be missed include ‘Kell Elliot’ at Daltons and the Spaniard, ‘Soul Symphony’s Jazz Quartet’ and ‘King K’ at the Folk House and ‘Kevin Mc & the Vintage Boys’ at the Lord Kinsale. And if you have any energy left on Saturday or Sunday night there’s ”Thriller Weekend’ – a jazzy dress and dance-off competition at the White Lady.
This year there are two special gigs, both requiring pre-booking; on Sunday evening there’s a Private Jazz Club at Ballinacurra House for the first time, featuring ‘Rose Room’, ‘Jaime Nancy & the Blues Boys’ and many others. This kicks off at 6.30pm and promises to be a super addition to the festival. Then on Monday afternoon, combine your lunch with music at the ‘Lunchtime Swing with Billy Crosbie & Sons and special guest Jimmy O’Byrne’ at Pier One Restaurant, Trident Hotel (tickets €27.50 include lunch and entertainment).
The music continues right up until Monday night, finishing with a special gig by ‘The Niall McCabe Band’ for all of the hardworking staff of Kinsale – well deserved after what promises to be a busy but great weekend for all.
