The fort itself is located on the Castlepark peninsula and beside the Dock Beach. There are a series of forts located around this grassy headland that are open to the public and free of charge the entire year.
James Fort and accompanying forts are a wonderful example of 17th century military architecture. The fort was built in 1607 and captured by Williamite forces in 1690.
While they have not been maintained to the same standards as Charles Fort across the harbour, the forts are in good condition and provide a fun and informative couple of hours for any visitors. The area of James Fort itself is absolutely stunning, it provides unique views of the harbour, Kinsale town and Charles Fort. Apart from the views, the grassy headland is kept in excellent condition to allow a leisurely walk around the forts while taking in the panoramic views on offer.
Due to its location to the Dock Beach, it’s a very popular walking and picnic spot. It’s approximately 3km from Kinsale town centre with a footpath available along the entire route from town to the headland. Once you arrive at Castlepark you can access James Fort from the marina side or via the beach.
Please remember to clean up after yourself and look after this wonderful and historic public space in Kinsale.
