Once you arrive at Sandycove it is easy to understand its appeal, with views of Ardkilly Creek leading out to Sandycove Island and onto an endless horizon, it is a treat for the eyes.

The cove, once used by smugglers to access the town, is now favourite for wild swimming fanatics. The cove features a walkway that leads down to a stony beach, or when the tide is in right into the sea, making the plunge that bit easier!

For those looking for a leisurely swim, making your way around Sandycove Island is a great adventure. Many experienced long distance swimmers swim around the island which has a 1,600m circumference, this route has proven to be a great training ground for the Sandycove Island Swimmers group, who boast more than 20 English Channel solo swimmers!

With stunning views and interesting landmarks Sandycove is the perfect location for kayaking in Kinsale. You’ll even find secret beaches and caves along the rugged cliffside.

From the cove you can start a stunning walk along the cliffs, when the sun is shining you can sit at natural vistas for a picnic with views of the brilliant blue sea and even when the skies are moody you’ll be greeted with gorgeous views of silver skies and glimmering seas. This walk is wild and untouched so be sure to keep to the path as there are dangerous drops all along this walkway!

If you follow the path you will be met with a view into Kinsale’s rich history, you’ll see the church and Graveyard of Courtaparteen Famine Village. Though you can’t access this historical site from the Sandycove walkway, when you’ve finished the walk you can hop back in your car and head to the entrance to walk through the Medieval Graveyard.
