In the 1970s, a group of innovative chefs opened a new wave of restaurants that blended traditional Irish cuisine with global flavors and techniques. Notable names who helped bring the town into the limelight were Gerry Galvin, Hedli MacNeice (widow of poet Louis MacNeice) and Peter Barry. In 1976 a group of visionaries founded the Kinsale Good Food Circle and helped to establish Kinsale as a food destination that put Irish cuisine on the map.

Today, Kinsale’s food scene is a vibrant mix of traditional and modern cuisine, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. The town’s diverse restaurants have found international fame and have appeared on many food programmes worldwide. The local chefs of today continue to put Kinsale on the map, this year (2023) three of the town’s restaurants were featured in The Michellin Guide!
