West Cork Collective Gallery presents IMRAMMA, a collective installation created as part of the Kinsale Arts Weekend Studio Trail 2026.
Drawing on the ancient Old Irish tradition of Imramma—mythical tales of sea voyages to otherworldly realms—this installation explores themes of journey, transformation and discovery. In early Irish literature, imramma stories describe heroic sea crossings in search of knowledge, destiny and spiritual meaning, blending pagan mythology with Christian symbolism.
In a contemporary context, Imramma becomes a powerful metaphor for migration, artistic exploration and personal pilgrimage.
About the Installation
This collaborative work represents the journey of West Cork Collective’s artist members, each of whom has travelled—by land or sea—to come together in Kinsale and share this creative space.
Some members arrived from overseas, while others have returned to Ireland, tracing their own paths back across the sea to the land of Ériu.
Each thread within the installation symbolically connects the artists to their current locations and personal journeys, converging toward the lighthouse—the guiding beacon of the Collective.
The work reflects themes of connection, displacement, return, and belonging, positioning the gallery as both a physical and symbolic meeting point for creative exchange.
