Kinsale Pottery: Raku Pottery & Firing
August 15, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Raku means Joy through making and it is an ancient Japanese firing process.
Have you ever thought of trying Raku pottery? You may not have used a raku kiln, but you may have seen the pottery before, or you may not. This technique is exciting, and makes use of a gas fired outdoor kiln which takes about 45 minutes to reach 1000 degrees. Pots are glazed using special low temperature raku glazes and when the kiln is at top temperature, it is opened and the pots are removed using long handled tongs. They’re placed in metal buckets of sawdust while still red hot, and then into water when they cool.
This course takes two half-days. The first is a class in making raku pottery and the second is the firing session. In the first session you can make 3 or 4 small pieces for raku firing. These will be dried and biscuit fired in time for the second class which involves the glazing of your pots and raku firings.
