Transition Town Kinsale
Transition Town Kinsale (TTK) has achieved a reputation abroad as the birthplace of the global transition movement (over 1000 Transition initiatives in 43 countries) where communities follow a path in the transition towards local sustainability. Its vision is a sustainable and resilient town.
Over the past 12 years, because of a committed group of volunteers, and the support of Cork County Council and other funders, TTK has facilitated projects in food, energy, transport and education. We have worked with other community and business groups including The Good Food Circle; The Chamber of Tourism; Tidy Towns; Sáile, Kinsale Arts Festival; local National Schools; the Community School; Kinsale College; Foróige and Kinsale Active Retirement Association. We also run many fun family community events to raise green-awareness.
Current initiatives include the following
* The Edible Trail Group have been busy over the last few years preparing beds and planting around the town. Transition Town Kinsale are delighted that this Edible Trail is now signposted on The Kinsale Maps; a big thank you to the Kinsale Advertiser for facilitating this. Herbs and berries etc. are free to take over the growing season. * A Community Orchard has been planted and is being maintained in conjunction with Saile Community Association. Fruit & Nut trees have also been planted in 3 residential areas in Kinsale and at the Allotment site at Ringrone. * Working with Tidy Towns to create Biodiversity zones in Kinsale area * Working with Plastic Free Kinsale and Tidy Towns to promote waste reduction and effective recycling. * Transition Town Kinsale is now a member of the Sustainable Energy Community Network and we are applying for grant funding to carry out an Energy Master Plan for the Town. In time TTK would hope that our community will benefit from the Better Energy Communities Grant Programme. This programme is Ireland’s national retrofit initiative, aimed at upgrading building stock and facilities to high standards of energy efficiency and renewable energy usage, thereby reducing fossil fuel usage, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions
